Preparing for Graduate School
There are two broad types of graduate programs: master-level programs and doctoral-level programs. Master’s programs typically require two years to complete, do not have funding, and are less competitive. In contrast, doctoral programs typically require five years to complete, are more likely to have funding (e.g., tuition remission, stipends), and are more competitive. The advice provided below focuses on doctoral programs, especially in psychology.
The successful doctoral applicant normally spends one to two years developing relevant skills and competencies beyond the basic coursework before they apply to doctoral programs. They learn, apply, and refine these abilities inside and outside the classroom. For the classroom, students need to actively consider their future careers and find courses that provide related expertise. Beyond the classroom, students should assist on a research project, network with professionals outside their university, and prepare for the graduate school application process.
